New Season! Cheap Monday @ The Outpost + More ;)

Hi Everyone!

I am not exaggerating when I say that every single show
and exhibition that I saw in Sydney was absolutely amazing!
At Semele Walk (the Handel Opera) my hands were gripped to
the balcony the whole way through.
It was the most innovative Opera and one of the best stage shows
I have ever seen.

David Byrne & St Vincent pre-show at the beautiful State Theatre

Again, David Byrne and St Vincent were incredible.
Virtually the whole show was choreographed, including their wonderful Brass Band
which gave the performance so much more personality.
They even played three Talking Heads songs This is the Place,
Burning Down the House and Road To Nowhere.
We gave them two standing ovations.

Brooklyn band, E.S.G. had the whole room dancing.

I somehow ended up at the Rolling Stone Awards Party!

The Francis Bacon collection at the Art Gallery of NSW was powerful through his
unique eye and his amazing use of colour.

Sky Mirror (2006) by Anish Kapoor at the front of the MCA

Here, I'm with friends Emma Sayer and Erin Dawson in the reflection of the back of the Sky Mirror

My Red Homeland (2003) by Anish Kapoor
Sculpture made from red wax with revolving arm that takes an hour to circle and keeps the piece evolving.

Marble, resin and bronze sculpture by Hany Arnanious on the rooftop of the MCA.
The cafe there has fantastic food and of course, there's the view...

"Dust" by Cong Lingqi @ White Rabbit Gallery

Charcoal and pencil drawing by Zhang Chun Hong @ White Rabbit Gallery

The White Rabbit Gallery is a privately owned gallery showing contemporary
Chinese art, specifically from the year 2000 onwards.
It is a beautiful four level space housed in a former Rolls Royce showroom
near Central Station in Sydney's Chippendale.
As you walk in, you're welcomed by a quirky gift store and a tea house.
These two pieces above are a little taster of the amazing level of work that is on
show at this wonderful gallery.
A great way to spend an afternoon.

Sydney Festival + SALE! Further Reductions!

Hi Everyone!

It feels like it's been ages!
Best wishes to you for this New Year.

I had a quiet New Year's Eve and actually stayed at home.
I think that I was just exhausted and it didn't feel like a night
to go out.
I did however go out the previous evening on December 30th
to see You Am I play a fantastic rock and roll show with
Velociraptor supporting at The Old Museum.

I started the New Year with one of my resolutions and that is to
read more again as I plowed through the best part of Grace Coddington's
new autobiography.
It's a fabulous fashion read!

Next week, I'm finally having a little get away in Sydney as the lure
of the Sydney Festival is just too great.
So rather than a beach break, I'm taking a cultural sojourn...

There is SO much to see but
here are some of my festival hot picks:

Semele Walk

Go for baroque!
It's a bold, new interpretation of Handel's Semele Opera performed by Germany's Solistenensemble
Kaleideoskop together with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.
The wild and dramatic costumes are Vivienne Westwood Couture which are enhanced by spectacular
hair and makeup so that our 1743 heroine has merged with 20th century punk. Incredible.

The legendary David Byrne (Talking Heads) has spent the last three years
collaborating with singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist St Vincent
(aka Annie Clarke / Polyphonic Spree) culminating in an album and this
performance named Love This Giant.
You may be familiar with their single Who and it's haunting video clip that was
released mid 2012.
I particularly love David Byrne's voice. He has such a strong and distinctive power.
Backed by a brass band instead of a traditional rock line-up, this is an unexpected
idea coming from an artistic basis making for something very contemporary.

Orchestre National de Jazz, France's national jazz orchestra pay homage
to British art rock icon Robert Wyatt with a live rendition of his
acclaimed 2009 album Around Robert Wyatt.
On stage, filmmaker Antoine Carlier enhances the performance with dream like
projections (pictured above) that act as a poetic backdrop to this jazz journey under the musical
artistic direction on Daniel Yvenic.

In 1967, Texan music teacher Conrad O. Johnson formed a band with his students
at Kashmere High School that combined the passion of soul and the energy of funk
with the arrangements of big band jazz.
45 years later, the Kashmere Stage Band continues it's legacy with inspirational teaching,
racial pride and their orchestral funk.
I'm not sure if the Fro's will still be this big, but you can bet that the beats will be!

Experience the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey
with the dramatic intensity of a live soundtrack from the Sydney Symphony
and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs under conductor Andre De Ridder.
Presented at the Concert Hall at Sydney Opera House, this will be
incredible and unforgettable!

Chinese artist Song Dong presents his moving installation Waste Not
at the Carriageworks.
Conceived by the artist following the death of his father, the work represents
his mother's mourning and remembrance.
It reflects a journey from grief through to resilience and consists of the entire contents
of her house to ultimately represent a celebration of life.

We are lucky enough to have one his amazing pieces in the permanent collection here at GoMA Brisbane.
Now, a major exhibition by Indian born, British based contemporary sculptor Anish Kapoor
is currently on show at the MCA.
They are almost too spectacular for words.
It is not only the size of his sculptures that are astounding
but the effects and illusions they create.
They are truly memorable.

The Sydney Festival is on until January the 27th.

ESG (Emerald, Sapphire and Gold) is a band formed by the
Scroggins Sisters in the South Bronx, New York in the early 1980's.
ESG have been hugely influential over the years across a wide
range of musical genres with their funky sounds based on complex polyrhythms.
They have been sampled by many other artists including Wu-Tang Clan,
Big Daddy Kane, The Beastie Boys, Unrest and The Liars.
ESG are in Australia for Melbourne's Sugar Mountain Festival
and are also playing one night in Sydney at Oxford Arts Factory with Kirin J Callinan
and Terrible Truths.
See you there!
